Let's Call it a Year

No way. The spirit is willing but the brain is weak -- weakened by excessive merriment and insufficient sleep, the latter aggravated by a new Great Dane puppy as of last Friday. So, consider it an open thread for advice, criticism, complaints, loose ends, aphorisms, future directions, musical recommendations, and hangover remedies.

My musical recommendations are Morricone Bossa, Morricone High, Morricone Kill, or maybe just the career-spanning Collected in order to get a sense of the incredible range of the Maestro.

I do prefer his earlier and more unconventional works, between around 1965 and 1975. He has composed the music for over 500 films, and I read somewhere that it was because the budgets were often so low that he was forced to rely on such unusual instrumentation as whistling, Jew's harp, surf guitar, and the unique wordless vocal stylings of Edda Dell'Orso, whose collections are out of print and too damn expensive, although I was lucky enough to pick up a used copy of the first for under ten bucks. Woo hoo!

I also recommend the cult film Seconds, which is all about diabolical freedom. Imagine if you could incarnate yourself. What could go wrong?

As for magical cures, brain elixirs, and life extension tweaks, I recommend the company Bulk Supplements. I'm experimenting with several, and before today, they seemed to be helping.

One of my gifts this year was a copy of Infinity Dwindled to Infancy; a fitting choice for Christmas. From the introduction, this:

How can the infinite become finite without losing its infinity? Can such a question even be meaningfully asked without lapsing into hopeless contradiction? ... what does it mean for God's infinity to dwindle to infancy?

To infanity, and beyond!

Re. Bulk Supplements, I've only tried the magnesium but it seems to be a good way to buy. Didn't know they had the branch chain amino acids, but those are wonderful for muscle recovery after workouts.

I think you mentioned using turmeric earlier this year. Thanks - that stuff is amazing! I was developing some arthritis in my finger joints that the usual otc pain meds didn't touch. The turmeric made it disappear; for the first couple of days, I could feel when it started working and when it wore off, then eventually it just didn't wear off.

Oh, Julie, thanks for the tip about tumeric!

And Merry Christmas, dearest Raccoons!

I just read a random comment on another site that is worthy of the Aphorist:

"People who can't control their own emotions resort to controlling other people's behavior."

That could easily sustain a whole post or two. It reminds me of another comment -- that White Privilege means being held responsible for the acts of one's ancestors by people who accept no responsibility for the acts of their children. Or even themselves, really.

I just found another good one, in answer to the question of why some people have such a strong emotional investment in believing - and trying to make it true - that boys and girls are the same (emphasis mine):

"they want them all to be the same blank slate,
on which they can sketch a picture of themselves"

Like an inverse -- and perverse -- image of the Creator.
