The Day of the Locust: Id is Accomplished

The earth has become small, and on it hops the last man, who makes everything small. His race is as ineradicable as the flea; the last man lives longest.... One has one's little pleasure for the day and one's little pleasure for the night: but one has a regard for health. --Nietzsche

Let's at least congratulate MephistO for a job well done. For those capable of reading the signs of the times, it is no exaggeration to say that yesterday was one of the darkest days in the history of the nation, and therefore the world. For make no mistake: the hostile forces intent on destroying the United States as we know it have won a huge victory. Irrespective of your politics, you must acknowledge that we are not the same country today that we were yesterday morning. But our Founders would no doubt weep over this latest assault on their dream and vision of an empire of liberty, and today the cosmos itself groans a little more audibly in its travail.

As Mark Steyn writes, "it's hard to overestimate the magnitude of what the Democrats have accomplished.... the governmentalization of health care will accelerate, private insurers will no longer be free to be 'insurers' in any meaningful sense of that term (ie, evaluators of risk), and once that's clear we'll be on the fast track to Obama's desired destination of single payer as a fait accompli....

"It's a huge transformative event in Americans' view of themselves and of the role of government. You can say, oh, well, the polls show most people opposed to it, but, if that mattered, the Dems wouldn't be doing what they're doing. Their bet is that it can't be undone, and that over time, as I've been saying for years now, governmentalized health care not only changes the relationship of the citizen to the state but the very character of the people. As I wrote in NR recently, there's plenty of evidence to support that from Britain, Canada and elsewhere.

"More prosaically, it's also unaffordable. That's why one of the first things that middle-rank powers abandon once they go down this road is a global military capability. If you take the view that the US is an imperialist aggressor, congratulations: You can cease worrying. But, if you think that America has been the ultimate guarantor of the post-war global order, it's less cheery. Five years from now, just as in Canada and Europe two generations ago, we'll be getting used to announcements of defense cuts to prop up the unsustainable costs of big government at home. And, as the superpower retrenches, America's enemies will be quick to scent opportunity.

"Longer wait times, fewer doctors, more bureaucracy, massive IRS expansion, explosive debt, the end of the Pax Americana, and global Armageddon. Must try to look on the bright side..."

Even PowerLine -- not given to bombast or hype, or to spiritual concerns for that matter -- agrees: "This is a dark day in American history; one of the darkest." But it is important to remember that the darkness is still potential, not close to being fully realized. For example, Dunkirk was one of the darkest episodes in the history of the West. And yet, in another way, it was the beginning of our response to the evil that threatened us all.

Or, to take a more recent example, the September 11, 2001 Islamist attacks; the threat had always been there, but people finally woke up to it on that day. Often, evil's greatest triumph can be the same moment it starts to be turned back. But it will never be vanquished in this cosmic cycle. Rather, it can only be controlled, like a chronic illness.

Indeed, you could even think of it as a disease process. The greatest triumph for my type I diabetes was July 3, 2004, when I found out about it. That morning, my fasting blood sugar was 238. It's been in complete control since. But it's only in control because I know it's there every day, trying to kill me.

So too is the left here every day, trying to destroy (of course, they would say "rescue") the country we love, with values antithetical to ours. Just as we cannot understand the motivations of the Islamists, it is difficult for a normal person to comprehend the diabolical tenacity, endurance, and ferocity with which Obama, Pelosi, and Reid rammed through their legislative crime.

The energy is literally superhuman; or, to be precise, infrahuman. What, do you really think that that botoxed and blinking cypher is able to cow grown men just with her charm and powers of persuasion? No. These people are literally under the spell of the adversary. Using only his human powers, Harry Reid couldn't persuade you to purchase a mobile home in Pahrump.

Why is this such a hinge of cosmic history? First, because the United States really is a shining city on a hill, the beacon of liberty, the last best hope of mankind, the guiding example and exception for the rest of the world. But there have always been forces that want to reduce us to the status of any other crappy little country. It is only a republic if we can keep it. As de Tocqueville observed -- and this is not a principle that escaped the Founders, who were well aware of the dangers of democracy -- "The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money."

As we know, every time the state does something for you, it does something to you. And once it does everything for us, it will be able to do anything to us. Our life -- and therefore our death -- will be in its icy grip.

The nation has a pre-existing spiritual illness. We call it the Left. But now the left has free and universal access to its own treatment, which will always be more of the same. As Doctor Zero writes, by its very nature, "No government program is a solution to anything." I would qualify that, and say that every government program is a solution to the problem of how the left can deny our liberty and usurp more power over our lives. Don't you feel better just knowing that 18,000 new IRS agents and dozens of federal agencies now have you in their hearts?

Why did Obama ram through a steaming pile of legislation that appears to seal the doom of his party? Because he realizes that what they have lost in terms of free and productive citizens they have more than made up for in serfs and wards (which is why amnesty for illegal Democrats is next, to assure a fresh crop of dependent voters). From now until November and beyond, the usual rabble of slaves and losers, the immature and irresponsible, will be hearing how much the Massa' has done for them.

Ace of Spades linked to the following quote, which may be unverified but nonetheless true: "A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship."

Christ's last words on the cross are It is accomplished. What was accomplished? Well, for starters, a bridge between man and God, time and eternity, the union of the divine and human nature, the terrestrial and celestial. But Alas, the time is coming when man will no longer give birth to a star.

This is a good day for the left, for truly, they can offer up their own version of Id is accomplished. For this is the union of man with his lower nature, everything small, petty, selfish, frightened, envious, and hateful of liberty. For him, mediocrity is the highest standard, beyond which is both inconceivable and forbidden, for knowing of it might damage the self-regard of the mediocrities. It is a triumph of Man the Insect, who hops around his flat little world in the inglorious Last Days.

Alas, the time of the most despicable man is coming, he that is no longer able to despise himself. Behold, I show you the last man.... --Nietzsche

Yes, but perhaps we should remember another quip spake by Fred -- that what doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

It is going to be interesting to me to see the doom and gloom today. You may have raised the bar on it for anyone else Bob. I am almost surprised you didn't shroud the page in black or at least put a black ribbon or something on it.

"What, do you really think that that botoxed and blinking cypher is able to cow grown men just with her charm and powers of persuasion?"

Gosh, I needed that LOL.

We--or rather, the losers--brought this on ourselves. I'm astounded the number of people who(like the first poster) cannot see the implications of this vote. "What? Could it be so bad? America has endured since before I was born, it must endure henceforth. Can democracy vote itself out of existence?"

In a word, Yes.

Unknown said...

@ teej,

Oh I can see the implications. But I am also still amazed at the amount of wailing and gnashing of teeth that is going on.

I think that for either side of whatever is the hot issue if the vote does not go their way then the end of the world and the republic, as which ever side sees it, is upon us. I am starting to hear a little Chicken Little from everyone and I grow tired of it.

Gagdad Bob said...

No wailing or gnashing here. I hope I'm being entirely detached and matter-of-fact.

It was possible for Canada, UK, et al to become quasi-socialist as long as America remained strong (just as effete sons in wealthy families may squander yet survive). All this changes when the root of global freedom is attacked.

I've said in this forum and elsewhere for many years: the Left is vastly more dangerous to the world than Islamic terrorism. Certainly in terms of overt harm, the Left is running roughly 100,000 corpses to 1 versus Islam in the past 100 years.

Gagdad Bob said...

Exactly. Socialist countries can afford to be socialist because we pay for their defense. Also, their economies are dependent upon a thriving US economy, but once we take the socialist path we will be just like them, with permanently stagnant growth and 10% unemployment as the norm.

teej said...

It wouldn't be so bad if all this meant was, that we'd become France. But, in a world without our firepower, NOBODY gets to be France.

Gagdad Bob said...

That's right. If everybody's a child, no one's a parent. It's the triumph of takers over makers.

I put the blame for what happened yesterday squarely on the shoulders of the American people. Of course the Left is always with us - like gonorrhea or hemorrhoids - but they are a permanent minority. So where the hell were the American people in November 2008? Sitting at home in a fit of stupid pique at George W. Bush, who wasn't even running?

Anybody who is even half-sentient (admittedly a minority) knew exactly who and what Obama was and what he would do as President long before he was elected. If you didn't know that, then you're too stupid to be allowed to vote (I wish). If you did know about it but sat at home on Election Day ("just to show Bush" or whatever), then don't whine about it now.

This applies to at least half of the people who are now showing up yelling at Tea Parties. Even though I largely agree with such people, I'm afraid I have very little patience with them.

Petey said...

Indeed. The left's greatest trick is to persuade you that it doesn't exist.

I was thinking something similar this morning (if you can call the inchoate mess inside my head “thinking”). I should be angry at Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama (sorry Bob: I am not detached or matter-of-fact, which is why I come here for my schoolin’). But I’m not. I’m angry at us, the American people, cause we asked for this and we’re getting it good and hard. Lack of attention, lack of valuing the great good that we have, may mean we lose it all.

No, Teej, these people are nihilists. There's nothing to be afraid of.

In China unemployment has stabilised at around 20%. They depend on a thriving US economy (or at least a lot of Walmart shoppers) to prevent another uprising of the workers over there. We're too smart to make anything over here except highly inventive financial "products" stuffed with wastepaper.

Almost a third of our taxes goes to service our debt (including the debt of our capital sector) & fund China's jobs programs. Another third goes to securing oil supplies for the benefit of all involved. What we don't pay for, we cover by selling our grandchildren into bondage.

Watching Democrats & Republicans debate this legislation, you almost can't help thinking about professional wrestling.

At least one can still despise democracy.

Well, Bob's prediction is for a reduction in prosperity and security, nationally and globally. We shall see.

I don't grok the exact mechanism for the projected decline, however I carefully track changes in public goods such as accountability, clean elections, security, food and medicine supply, education, and infrastructure.

At a certain point eough degradement of public goods will usually foment a coup or an insurgency, but I think we are a long way from that.

The really intollerable thing is, that every time the state does something for you, it does something to large numbers of other people, for you. Not only do you surrender some of your rights, you enable the state to strip some of the rights of other people, for your benefit.

That disgusts me.

But surprisingly, I'm not in a foul mood today, it's not as if I didn't see this coming. I'm actually somewhat relieved, for now there is something concrete that is being established, which is in and of itself getting the undivided attention of people who didn't pay very close attention to what I and so many others have been saying for a couple years now.

This is going to be a very interesting next couple of years.

To all: Happy Dependence Day

This idea that America still exists is silly. We are a people of laws or we are not. We have become a collection of ghettos strung together through the binding agent of envy. This little affair has demonstrated that "our country" does not exist. The Constitution is clearly irrelevant because those more "special" than us have deemed it so. How many ivy leagued legal scholars will be telling us this obamanation is Constitutional? Why did we ever think a contract written by common men for common men ever needed post graduate intermediaries to interpret it for us? BTW, there were no law schools standing at the time of our Declaration and Constitution. Freedom demands goodness and goodwill to succeed collectively. Unfortunately our countrymen are plum out of both. Oh yeah, we will be introducing another 20 to 30 million Mexicans to insure the obamanation continues. Like I said, we don't have a country anymore - at best we have insurance plan with inbuilt suicide pact to insure the continuation of Jeremiah Wrights vision of racial envy and retribution ( a John Brown he is not).

The idea of swearing an oath to God to uphold the Constitution is quaint. Something that happened long ago. The ideas of equality have long since been eroded. Goodness and goodwill versus free things has been determined. Our countrymen have spoken.

Sorry guys, but I am really depressed. I spent my entire adult life fixing the screw ups of 4 years of Jimmy Carter and now watch this nimrod and his clones set up the next 30 years of misery.

What you don't seem to get, and your leftie power players in Washington echo, is that this one isn't seen as merely a hike in taxes, or a waste of money - it is correctly seen as a direct threat to our Rights as Americans.

And there are a lot of Americans which that still means something to. They'd turned away from politics long ago because they saw that it didn't mean much to the politicians, who were (surprise, surprise) more interested in money. Now they are being starteled awake to the fact that those annoying politicians have moved beyond money, and are now attempting to steal their Rights.

This is a whole new ball game which the left is, I think, completely unprepared for... the proverbial bringing of a knife to a Tank battle.

Pelosi & Obamao yesterday said in effect what the ditzy CNN newsbabe said to the early Tea Party protestors in Chicago, words to the effect of,

"Don't you realize that Barack Obama is giving you a $300 tax rebate?! "

And the protestors just stared at her in shock... she really thinks it's about ... 'money'.

So did the British.

It wasn't, and it isn't.

History.

It's something worth learning from.

Tigtog said "We have become a collection of ghettos strung together through the binding agent of envy. This little affair has demonstrated that "our country" does not exist. The Constitution is clearly irrelevant because those more "special" than us have deemed it so."

Nah. We've become a nation of people who decided to leave those who were satisfied with ghettos, to their ghettos. Without sparing a lick of well deserved blame for We The People, the vast majority of people, as I mentioned above, were turned off by the the hypocrisy and criminal doings of congress... and foolishly thought that they could just ignore them and leave them to their wheelings and deelings without fear of harm. They moved to the suburbs of the cities and of their own attention, and thought they could toodle on safely taking little Johnny and Jane to little league or (gasp) soccer (that's for you Ximeze, where you are) without fear of harm from their politicians.

But thanks to Pelowsee, Reed and Obamao, they are now waking up to the error of their ways. They thought they could go on enjoying the benefits of America without bothering themselves over taking care of it. It's a rude awakening, but they are awakening. And they are not going to forget this by November - this isn't being looked upon as an issue of higher taxes or having to step outside to smoke - it is viscerally an issue of their rights to live their own lives and the future of their children... and the slugs of the left, those who depend upon sponging off of the fruits of those who know how to do what needs to be done, are about to come up against people who know how to do, can do, and do do what it takes to get things done - and they are pissed.

It really is going to be an interesting next couple of years.

Ricky, Mushroom & Tigtog and others,

Samuel Adams said,

"...If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquillity of servitude than the animating contest of freedom—go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen!"

in a speech at the Philadelphia State House, August 1, 1776 "to a very numerous audience”

He delivered that speech to numerous, willing and responsive ears... but he didn't find many willing and responsive ears to begin with twenty something years earlier. He was delivering that message and trying to get people to pay attention for years and years, to a people satisfied with the assumption that their rights as Englishmen were safe and sound. Sam tried every which way to work people up, but it took the cooperation of the British to begin abusing, ignoring and generally pissing off the Colonists to finally do the trick. And even then, there was at least a full third of the Colonists who remained happy licking the hand of their master.

Such will always be with us - Free Will includes the freedom to not care about being free. The real question is, where will you be?

It takes a while to get a free peoples attention who are busy being free, but once you do... look out.

Washington has just got the American people's attention... how about you?

I see Dana Loesch is on the same wavelength.

P.S. We've got it ridiculously easy, in comparison to Sam and the boys. We've already got a Declaration of Independence, we've already got a Constitution, and we don't have to face down a line of Redcoats on the village green.

The only thing we have to do to re-secure our liberty, and that of our children, is to speak up, stand up, make yourselves felt by those in power, contribute some time and work to replace those in power who won't listen.

Piece a cake.

That is my point, we were a country of laws, the Constitution being preeminent, and these fools have thrown it away. Now what in heaven binds us? Goodwill, Equality, Compassion, Tolerance, Mercy? These are real things that used to have currency but have been degraded by the statist/fascist. My point is simply we are bound today by our country's belief in envy and race and it depresses me.

Americans remain armed. Few people realize that 100 years ago all British gentlemen were armed as a matter of course. The police were not. The police would often enlist the help of a passing gentleman (who would pocket his pistol along with his watch each morning) in waylaying a fleeing felon.

In the past 15 years the British have been completely disarmed by the Left. Even hunting weapons are all but entirely confiscated. This of course will produce (has already produced) fascism.

America isn't that far gone yet, and frankly I very much doubt the Democrats will EVER succeed in disarming the people.

Right now the single greatest tool we have at our disposal is the Republican Party. Don’t like the Republicans? Tough shit. Hold your nose, and get on board. Then get involved and let them know what you want from them. Work on changing the details as you go. Now is not the time to go willy nilly join the libertarians, constitutionalists, or any other wacked third party group. Now is the time to bring them into the fold, hear what they have to say, and get them to pull with us. The effort must be singular and focused, not dissipated and scattered. The Democrat party has become the enemy. They are no less inimical to the Union than the communists, or islam. They must be scorched from the political landscape. Slashed and burned out of power. Their guttersnipe pandering pimps in Hollywood, the television networks, and newspapers must pay the price as well. Kill your TV. Burn the Newspaper. Fuck the movie theaters. We have one direct road to the corridors of power- the two party electoral process. We have one on-ramp, and that is the Republicans, like ‘em or not.

What is the "net/net" of this new health legislation for the average working American? Well, having lived in multiple countries including (primarily) the US and Canada, I can pretty much tell you what to expect: your healthcare will gradually become mediocre (Canada) to appalling (UK) unless you are truly wealthy (8 figure net worth, or better) in which case it's a non-issue since you can buy what you need, including $1.5M surgeries + medication, etc. in some not-so-extreme cases. Canada attempts to make even this option unavailable (basically wealthy Canadians must fly to the US for advanced care). This legislation doesn't do that -- yet. However it does make the provision of traditional health "insurance" completely impractical, if not impossible. The system will now become socialized. The question is whether it will be a reasonably sane model (France) or just plain horrible (UK NHS). Or worse. There's always worse.

Stephen Macdonald said...

One thing I can tell you for sure: every single elite Democrat knows deep inside neither they nor their families will ever be exposed to the cruelty of the system they have unleashed. They all have the money -- and more importantly the connections -- to circumvent the system and get the care they need. This is exactly how it works in Canada. If you're well-off and politically/socially connected you're fine. God help you otherwise -- it's a crapshoot.

Yep. And don't just work with them, look at taking them over and setting things right - as much as is possible, remember: people, imperfect, disagreement, fallen, etc - it's a political party, not a salvational one.

Check into your local committee openings, you'd be surprised how much affect they can have on larger issues.

We killed the obamao's "Race To The Top" program in Missouri (for the moment) because we began calling, emailing and driving to the state house and showing up in large numbers the gallery and in our rep's offices & halls - gets their attention.
