The Leftist Culture of Death: In the Beginning is the Surd

Have you ever wondered why Democrats are the Party of Death? Just what are the first principles of the unprincipled? What animates the insentient?

Now, when I say this -- and this should be obvious -- by no means am I castigating all Democrats, most of whom are no doubt fine people, just confused, uninformed, frightened, seduced, reactionary, bought off, apathetic, fearful of change, or mired in habits of thought that were formed in college and haven't changed one bit since.

We're talking about the true believers, who only constitute maybe 30% of the party, and (to the credit of decent Democrats) have to actually lie about who they are and what they believe in order to get the other 70% to go along with the program.

I can guarantee you that the majority of Democrats are not actually in favor of, say, destroying the Boy Scouts through legal harassment, or banning the ROTC from college campuses, or partial birth abortion, or state control of medicine, or Miranda rights for terrorists, or prosecuting the men and women who play rough with terrorists in order to keep us safe. These are all abominations, and if the majority of Democrats actually favored them, we'd probably be past the point of no return.

The point is, progressivism in its most virulent and pathological form is always a religion. For example, another one of the most prominent religious hucksters of the left is Marianne Williamson, who is on par with Deepak in terms of spiritual stupidity and corruption. She is upset because Obama is not yet governing as a one hundred percent Marxist, as if that is possible given the constraints mentioned above, i.e., that most Democrats would not be happy to know Obama's true agenda. Therefore, it must be enacted with stealth and deceit, protected by a bodyguard of media liars and bouncers.

After all, Obama is not being constrained by Republicans, as Williamson suggests. Democrats control all three branches of government, and can literally do whatever pleases them, including even fundamentally unconstitutional things such as socialized medicine. Indeed, their satanic judicial philosophy conveniently allows them to interpret the Constitution as meaning whatever they need it to mean in order to achieve their statist goals.

In order for the left to succeed, it must necessarily mask its first principle -- that it is the party of Death -- and affirm the opposite. Therefore, Williamson says that her first political principle is derived from "the immense unnecessary suffering in the world." She says to herself, "Wow, it's sad about all that pain people are going through. Let's try to assuage it."

First of all, it's not "let's try to assuage it." Rather, it's "let's you try to assuage it by the government taking enough of your money." The left always talks about the "social contract," but it's not a contract if the other party says to me, "your signature or your freedom. Your choice."

Nor does Williams consider the fact that the majority of human pain is self-inflicted, either due to personal issues or simply the nature of fallen man. To imagine that we could ever eliminate the suffering to which man is heir -- and much of which is actually necessary in order to grow -- is to live as a child. And since suffering can never actually be eradicated, it is to grant infinite power to the state to keep trying. It's like giving the state a mandate to end romantic heartbreak.

And of course, the religious abstractions of the left prevent them from seeing all of the faceless victims of their war on poverty, i.e., the poor. One cannot imagine them ever trying to tally the cost of the broken homes, the urban blight, the criminality, the murder, rape and violence that all skyrocketed when the federal government decided that it knew how to end poverty without causing catastrophic unintended consequences. As it stands, Obama is creating more poor and dependent people as fast as he can, and yet Williamson isn't satisfied. What more can he do?

The empty promises of the left are rooted in false premises about reality, most especially, materialism and relativism. When I say that their first philosophical move is to turn the cosmos upside down, I mean this quite literally.

But after they do so, they quickly adapt to the world they have created, so that it appears "real" to them (very much like the glasses that turn the field of vision upside down; within a matter of weeks, the brain adapts, and the person has no difficulty making their way through the world. But remove the distorting glasses, and they will again be disoriented.)

Now, if matter is ultimate, then relativism necessarily follows, since materialism undermines the very possibility of truth. Please note what necessarily follows from the initial premise: life is actually death; consciousness is actually matter; love is only lust (or some kind of deceptive power game); form is substance; democracy is truth; quality is quantity; existence is nothing; and creation itself is just our bad luck.

And creation is bad in the absence of a creator. How could it not be? This has been addressed ad nauseam (literally) in the existentialist literature of the 20th century, so there is no need for me to press the point. If there is no God, then will and appetite are supreme, and life is a horror.

This is the real reason the left affirms a right to die but not a right to life. They reject the right to life because they hate (or at least devalue) life, while they perversely oppose capital punishment because they are (necessarily) fearful of death.

For when you invert the cosmos, your new absolute is grim death. Death is the only certainty. Furthermore, it is a meaningless death, therefore something to be avoided at all costs -- including the cost of a meaningful life, since there can be no meaning anyway. Therefore, life becomes the avoidance of death at all costs, but for no reason at all. In short, Death rules. Thus, the leftist would always prefer to live on his knees than die on his feet.

For the secular leftist, God does not exist and man is him. But again, in the absence of the true God, man can only be a god of death -- and not just material death. Rather, since the god of death denies the soul, it results in the elimination of the individual, thus the dreary uniformity of the left, enforced by the intellectual brutality of political correctness. Manhood is exchanged for tenure, and ideology becomes the opiate that confers a sound sleep. Ideology is not just the study of idiots. Then again, perhaps it is.

Since the left inverts the cosmos, it becomes "bottomless" -- in other words, the infinitude of God is transformed into the existential groundlessness of the left. This is why, for example, to hear Charles Johnson or Andrew Sullivan or Keith Olbermann opine on just about anything is to hear the cosmic void "thinking out loud." This is not intellectual but intellectualism, i.e., the replacement of true ideas and principles with mere abstractions. That the abstractions are stupid and dehumanizing is beside the point. It is actually Death speaking. And if the secular left is correct, Death owns you.

Ms. Williamson has yearned for "shock and awe," performed on America for its citizen's own good. How compassionate!

I believe it was our other favorite, Mr. Maher, who said that us simple folk are "too stupid" to understand Obamacare, so it should be rammed down our throats.

As a kid, this line of reasoning was billed as "Better Red than dead." It has become conventional wisdom. Freedom is just an overrated asset, a "side issue" to be brushed off like lint.

On the other hand, it's a lovely day, hereabouts.

I've often heard it's converse, "Live Free or Die," derided as highest brute stupidity. And yet, it is simply the truth. On a related note, Spengler today quotes this passage about the fall of the Roman Empire:

Farms originally run by small business families throughout Italy were soon gobbled up and replaced by enormous slave run plantations owned by the aristocratic elite. Cheap slave labor replaced work for the common man and the roles of the unemployed massive grew to epidemic proportions. These issues had a great destabilizing effect on the social system which had a direct role in the demise of the Republic. As the rift between Senatorial elite (optimates) and social reformers (populares) grew, the use of the unemployed, landless, yet citizen mobs were an overwhelming ploy grinding away at the ability of the Senate to govern.

The Death and Treason Party and the Islamist have much in common. They are both death cults. From Margaret Sanger to Rachel Carson to Islamism and statism, it continues and we are talking about millions of deaths.

They are beyond reason and compromise in their goals of destroying Western culture, symbolized by Israel and America. They are uneasy allies for now, just as the Iranian communists and Islamist Mullahs were when they overthrew the Shah with help of another Progressive known as President Jimmy Carter"-Jonah Goldberg

I enjoyed your absurd diatribe. It was so bad it was good.

I don't think you can link it to anything out there is real life, however.

Its all impending threats. You can never, and have never, pinned actual harm on the leftists. This is because you are never detailed enough. You don't do your homework.

Or, there's nothing there. More likely that.

Vague references to increased rates of poverty ,murder, rape, etc. don't cut the mustard. You'd have to analyze the numbers regime by regime, compare the Bush numbers to the Obama numbers, and there just isn't time in the world to split hairs over this. You'd have to weigh in just how much a political party impacts quality of life, versus other variables.

You're not even in the ballpark as a sociologist. Why don't you just stick to comparative philosophy, where you have some knowledge?

Your persisten bitterness about Democrats is unwarranted.

The nation is fine. We have a good nation. We have a bright future. We have happy people. Can you not accept these things?

What would make you happy? Increased book sales? What would it take, dude?

Lo, a psychologist who believes that over half the populace is satanic or under the influence of satan. Who in the world pays your salary? When it was originally found that *stimulus* monies went to non-existent Congressional districts, our Prez was asked to comment. "That's a side issue," he said. "Everyone knows that accounting is an inexact science."

So please, be calm, be tranquil - do as Muhallah says. Don't get excited. The peoples are happy. And as Pete has said, the hypnotized never lie.

Another good post. Too distracted by a family member's illness to do more than quote this in harmony (I hope):

Psalm 14

For the director of music. Of David.

1 The fool says in his heart,

“There is no God.”

They are corrupt, their deeds are vile;

there is no one who does good.

2 The Lord looks down from heaven

on the sons of men

to see if there are any who understand,

any who seek God.

3 All have turned aside,

they have together become corrupt;

there is no one who does good,

not even one.

4 Will evildoers never learn—

those who devour my people as men eat bread

and who do not call on the Lord?

5 There they are, overwhelmed with dread,

for God is present in the company of the righteous.

6 You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor,

but the Lord is their refuge.

7 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!

When the Lord restores the fortunes of his people,

let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

Yes... all those instances of lost rights to property, life, liberty and right to pursue happiness are just so meaningless. Perhaps 'ninny, you can be the first leftist to answer me this question... it's not that difficult, not as if I'm asking you to actually define what Rights are, or anything like that... just answer me this.

Let's suppose there's a place nearby where people are actually enslaved, in the old fashioned pre-civil war sense, and you, a righteous leftie in association with an underground railroad, have a chance for a brief private conversation with a well kept, pampered, cared for like one of the family house slave... how would you interest them in coming with you to 'freedom' to live in a land where all is fine, good, bright futures and happy people...

Would you tell them that they'd be able to live their life as they chose (as long as that meant buying govt defined healthcontrol or risk fines and imprisonment)?

Would you tell them they'd be able to keep their own money and plan their own future (as long as those plans included forking over 20%-80% of their earnings for 'necessary' services(don't worry what, governocrats will decide) and the 'security' of having govt plan their retirements)?

Would you tell them they could own their own property (as long as govt didn't see a better use for it... as they did for Susette Kelo's home... such a nice vacant lot now...)?

Would you tell them they could perhaps build up a family business and pass it down to their kids (unless it were something that the govt decided to 'rescue', like a car dealership)?

Would you tell them that they'd be able to raise their kids and give them a good education (as long as that meant in govt approved schools with govt approved teaching certificates)?

Would you tell them... well... what would you tell them to make them want to leave their house slave status, where they're on such good and personable terms with there masters... for your leftie house slave status... where they'll have a nice DMV relationship with their bureaucrat masters?

Do tell.

24 suicides in one company in the past 18 months... WTF?

".... it is not dissipation of one's substance, but the desire for security that accounts for the two dozen suicides at the French telephone company. It seems inexplicable that healthy and affluent people would end their lives over the prospect of having to go out and find a new job, unless we consider that there is a bit of death built into the craving for security to begin with. Life is risky, and to withdraw from it is to embrace death. That is why the sort of person who seeks a lifetime sinecure at a state monopoly is more likely to tumble into despair at the first intrusion of uncertainty."

Hey Van:

I'm the "sunshine" troll, who feels the nation is on good footing.

I appreciated your rebuttal, which was detailed and specific.

I see there are problems with government excess I wasn't aware of.

The jail time for failure to pay for health insurance, in particular, needs further clarification.

I was aware prison awaits income tax evaders, but this is on a whole new level.

Of course, it is not law yet. Thank goodness.

In the case of the home-schooling laws in California, I am ambivalent.

Parents can be whacko. Home school curriculum should probably be, if not regulated, at least checked on.

For the good of the children. People who sequester their children are, on one hand, understandable, on the other hand creepy. There is a line there which can be crossed, when fear overcomes common sense.

To shield a child from exposure to the theory of evolution is akin to taking away his comic books or no letting a teeneger discover the Playboy under Dad's bed. Sure, they may all be racy, but let the kid decide what to make of it all, sheesh.

But anyhoo, plenty food for thought here. Again, thank you.

Van Harvey said...

Yes... I see what you mean... I don't however see how that means that a govt approved & nObama appointed Safe Schools czar is to be assumed a more credible 'person' to trust... or does that also fall under "...racy, but let the kid decide what to make of it all..."?

That's a lot of unawareness and unfounded assumptions expressed there, on some very important issues... luckily for you, some folks considers such issues before, in fact centuries worth of such consideration of issues resulted in concepts of Individual Rights, Law rooted in Natural Law, not the whims of Leviathan... and a revolution was fought for them, and after initial theories proved ineffective, an entire nation debated just such issues and how to implement them... take a look here, you'll find not only the document they created (The U.S. Constitution) in order to be able to balance such issues of Rights of the people against the needs of the state, but the reasoning behind it as well as the debates on each clause of it, here, start with the Preamble... scroll down, familiarize yourself with the ideas that went to it, before blindly dismissing what some of the finest minds in history had to say on the issues, do that, and you may help spare us other unexpected and 'whacko' occurrences.

Of course most Democrats are well-intentioned, decent people. So are most Republicans. There is a fringe of really rotten people on the conservative side of the spectrum, to be sure. One need only look at the postings on mainstream sites like Lucianne.com to see old-fashioned "I hate n_____s" racism on a regular basis. That site has toned down the worst of them; some years ago they were much more virulent. Another sub-species of conservative seems to be the extremely self-righteous prick who only ever feels something like joy when he hears about some hapless 17 year old burglar getting shot in the head by an NRA member. What a great day!

The key difference is that these people are truly a fringe element. Unfortunately the Democratic Party is increasingly driven at source by intrinsically evil forces, abetted by some truly evil people. Few people have done a better job of explaining this in plain, well-documented style than Jonah Goldberg. The typical progressive who just dismisses his book are cut from the same cloth as the liars who dismissed the Climategate scandal.

But to be 100% clear -- most Democrats and even actual leftists are decent and well-intentioned. Let's continue to pray that they might experience some of the Grace that allowed the scaled to fall from the eyes of many of us here (it sure wasn't my doing).

Nobody here can tell you that. Beyond suggesting that you educate yourself further, what you decide to do with this shift in views is entirely up to you. It would seem to be nice if there were a simple, easy answer - if, for instance, just voting Republican were the solution. But it's not, for a whole host of reasons. One Cosmos is not a cult site bent on telling you what to think and what to do, though I personally recommend that you think for yourself.

It is up to you to weigh the evidence. On voting and activism, what do you consider important, who best represents those views, and how can you support those representatives?

On trolling, how effective is it at changing minds? And is it your calling to change them? If so, are there more effective means?

Only you can answer those questions and act accordingly.

Liberals always come later, after all the risk and danger is gone, like parasites to latch on the fruit of the labors of others. You don't encourage parasites, but rather expose and detach them."

Liberals, because of their own lack of productive capacity, are not able to build up their own territorial state. Rather, they need the work and creative activity of other nations as a base for their own existence. The existence of the liberals themselves thus becomes that of a parasite within the life of other peoples....The end of liberal domination is nevertheless always the decay of all culture and finally the insanity of the liberal himself.

"The most onerous expression of idolatry in the modern era was the communist conceit that the scientific ordering of society can eliminate uncertainty. Scientific socialism was supposed to eliminate economic crises and war; instead, it brought about 100 million deaths and reduced once-prosperous countries to penury. Seventy years after its founding, the entire value of the industrial plant of the Soviet Union and its satellites was less than its scrap value, taking into account the costs of environmental cleanup. The life expectancy of Russian men has fallen to only 55 years, and the most frequent cause of death is alcoholism. Russia and its former satellites have such low fertility that their populations will fall by between one-third and one-half by mid-century. Europe's nanny-state version of social democracy is a low-grade version of the same infection."

It's not that liberals can't or won't create wealth. On the contrary, Google, Apple, Pixar, Microsoft, at least 2/3 of Wall St. -- just the tip of the iceberg --all deeply liberal through and through. It is nowhere more dangerous than with Google (which owns this blog service).

"and (to the credit of decent Democrats) have to actually lie about who they are and what they believe in order to get the other 70% to go along with the program." They do this by perverting words...the prime example being the sick twisting of the word "choice" to describe the killing of one's own offspring--which is involuntary, of course, for the victim. That way they can cry: "What, you're against a woman's right to *choose*? What a neanderthal!" So many otherwise decent people are cowed by these outright lies. Bob, what you've said here about death being the absolute principle in their inverted world is so true. The party of death is the contingent of hopelessness. Thus doth Obama protest too much with all his meaningless hope/change double talk. Again, it's a mask for emptiness of soul. Only a fool would place his hope in such gaseous rhetoric. Here's a prime example: Jim Wallis, the apologist for evangelicals who wished to vote for Obama ("socialized healthcare prevents abortion!"--yeah, except when it FUNDS it), is holding a conference on "Rediscovering Values," I hear.... I told the friend who announced this that my values have always been firmly intact. Thanks in large part to good, conservative, Christian parenting, I know what the President himself, his party, and his Christian apologists do not seem to: that killing babies is evil.
