I remember being a college kid walking past a group of scientologists handing out pamphlets on campus, and waving them away.
Maybe there was something distressing for them in my gesture or something. I thought I was just in a hurry trying to make it to class, but whatever I did really pissed em off. They all angrily catcalled me accusing me of all kinds of debilitating issues and conditions and future troubles on the way for daring do whatever it was they thought I’d done.
Truth was, I’d bought a copy of Dianetics and had actually been impressed by the first couple chapters. But when it started getting into all these implausible woo techniques which I’d have to pay good money for, I realized it was just money-extracting cult crap and hucked the book under my bed.
I was a poor townie living at home to save money. My mother found that book, and alarmed, showed it to my minister father. Instead of just having a frank discussion with me about this, he assumed that I was about to join a cult and took me to a Christian counselor. Something was clearly wrong with me, he presumed.
Lucky for me, the counselor was a wise humanist sort and eventually sided with my story. He tried to reassure my parents that I was fine and had the good sense to not be joining any cults. But they wouldn’t have any of it. They knew what I was and that was the end of it. I was demonically possessed.
I’m thinking that things would be a lot better in this world of ours if we could just ease off the self-importance for a bit and actually listen to others for a change. I’ll try harder to do that more around here.

The situation is Afghanistan just took an interesting turn. Enter a lesser known super-bad enemy, ISIS Khorasan (ISIS-K).
We now have a new organization to pummel with bombs. 13 service-men and a slew of Afghan civilians died, and now it is payback time.
This we can all understand, it is black and white. It also paints the Taliban in a new queer light as friendly, because "the enemy of my enemy is my friend."
Also Biden can now play the hawk and order bombs to be delivered to appropriate locations.
This all plays in favor of stability. ISIS steps in to serve as the "MacGuffin," the unexpected factor that changes the situation.
This is fortuitous timing. The US has finally concluded its own protracted culture war; this leaves her in good fettle to concentrate pent-up aggressions in Afghanistan.
