God Can't be Known; Rather He is Only Infinitely Knowable

Most things we seek to obtain are for the sake of something else: for example, we eat in order to survive. But why do we want to survive? I don't know. Must be for its own sake. It's like happiness that way; no one ever asks himself why on earth he wishes to be happy. Rather, happiness (in the Aristoteleological sense) is the point of it all.

Now, anything below the realm of metaphysics -- you'll excuse me, but I'm thinking this through for the first time -- must be for the sake of something else. For example, right now I'm typing. Why? Don't laugh, but I can't think of any other reason but to seek and communicate wisdom. Okay. Why do that? I don't know. Must be for its own sake.

It's certainly not for any of the usual suspects: money, fame, power, status, the fine Colombian, the Cuervo Gold, etc.

In an essay called Mystery and Philosophy, Pieper makes the subtle point that

wisdom cannot be the property of man for the very reason that it is sought after for its own sake; what we can fully possess cannot satisfy us as something sought after for its own sake; the only wisdom that is sought after for its own sake is the kind that man is not able to have as a possession.

In short, -- in reference to why I'm doing this -- I am seeking something I can never possess, and trying to communicate something I don't have. There's a name for that: a fool's errand, or wild nous chase.

"Philosophical questioning," writes Pieper, "aims at comprehending, at ultimate knowledge." However,

not only do we not possess such knowledge, but we are even, on principle, incapable of possessing it, and therefore we will also not possess it in the future.

Okay then. We've never had it, we don't have it, and we'll never get it. Anything else before we wrap this up? Have we learned nothing in 15 years of blogging? What were we hoping to find, anyway? And how can such a vacuous exercise result in so much writing about it? That's a lot of posts, but 3,423 x 0 is still 0.

Yes, but O is not 0. Big Infinite difference!

Imagine if we could gather together all the poets, painters, and musicians, and tell them, "look, you've been at this for 50,000 years, but I don't see that you're any closer to possessing Beauty. Now, go out there and bring back Beauty once and for all!"

Ah, but the pursuit of beauty is another one of those activities that is for its own sake. What Pieper says of wisdom can be equally applied to it: beauty sought after for its own sake can never be possessed. One can try, but it is a sort of category error, for it is nothing less than the attempt to contain infinitude wihin finitude (or transcendence in immanence).

Of which I am guilty, with an explanation, or at least rationalization. I am an audiophile and collector, or, if you want to cut to the chase, you could say that I don't have a hobby, rather, my hobby has me. Well, first of all, a man needs a hobby. Second, I see what I'm doing. I see right through myself -- occasionally -- so a I don't pretend it has any end, or that I can cure the habit by indulging in it. I'll never have everything I want, if only because I want to want. It's pretty harmless, at least compared to cocaine.

As is the blog. It also goes nowhere, with no hope of ever arriving there. If a final Answer were attainable, this would imply that

the thing is known to the full extent that it is knowable in itself. In other words: the adequate answer to the philosophical question would have to be an answer which exhausts the subject, a statement in which the knowability of the object in question is exhausted to such an extent that nothing purely knowable remains but only the known (Pieper).

In the end, O = O. But we are not O. This is why God can never be known: because he is only infinitely knowable.

Thus the claim to have found the "formula of the world" is without hesitation to be called unphilosophical. It is of the essence of philosophy that it cannot be a "closed system" -- "closed" in the sense that the essential reality of the world could be adequately mirrored in it....

The deeper one's positive knowledge of the structure of the world the more one becomes clear that reality is a mystery. The reason for inexhaustibility is that the world is creature, i.e., that it has its origin in God's incomprehensible, creative knowledge (ibid.).

Simultaneously clear and obscure; Joyce called it clearobscure, a pun on the intermingling of shadow and light in chiarascuro (clear-dark). So I hope that was sufficiently obscure. I sometimes have a tendency to be too clear.

If we could possess it, we would find it not worth owning. Or perhaps, we wouldn't know what to do with it, much like the dog chasing after the fire engine. It's not the having that is wanted, it is the pursuit in and of itself. The engine is just the macguffin that keeps the dog running; just so the longing for wisdom is the ever-out-of-reach treasure that keeps the philosopher seeking.

If we could demonstrate the existence of God, everything would eventually be subjected to the sovereignty of man.

If God were the conclusion of a rational argument I would feel no need to worship him.

Hopefully dogs chasing after fire engines know not to get their heads squashed.

My joy is in calling out sinners who enjoy their sinning just a little too much, while trying to not get my head squashed. Maybe others will join in and we can all have some fun together.

I once inherited a little long dog who absolutely loved defending my car. We'd be driving along and he'd see a dog and suddenly get all super-territorial with lots of barking, growling and biting at the window. Since I was amused by this I'd encourage him. Obviously no practical goals were achieved. Just a little amusement to pass the driving/riding time.

I bought a new house that I was remodeling. After my day job I'd pick up little long dog at the old house and drive him over to the new place where I'd work for a few hours. There was this neighborhood we'd drive through, well-populated with dogs. He loved showing them who was boss. One day we drove through it, dog all ready to go, but no dogs. Not at this house, not that house. No dogs. He started whining. Where were they?

And then at the last house there they all were! All off leash and chilling on the front lawn together. All six dogs. Little long dog completely freaked out, putting on his best display. The six dogs chased the car down the street barking crazily. A guy mowing his front lawn saw the parade of car and angry dogs coming down the street and gave me the worst WTF?! look.

Maybe that's what practicing Christianity is like. A mischievous driver, an angry little long dog, six equally pissed off dogs, and a neighbor wondering what the hell's going on.

So Nicolas worships irrational arguments?

I might need a bit of clarification on this.

Reason alone is tautological, for logical operations do not furnish the material with which to reason. Things aren't true because they are logical, but logical because true.

God is a logician. But not only a logician.

GAGDAD BOB, of course your hobby doesn't really have you, not in the sense of possession otherwise you couldn't write as a free spirit like you do. For possession you need a rogue theological idea that implants as a seed and when nurtured by the host can grow strong enough to consume it who then becomes it's mouthpiece. Such a person can be identified by a belief system that does not comply to the senses, that is basically nonsense. The question of course is why?. Why are people being used in this way to be signposts to fake gods. Of course generally they do no harm and indeed most of the time do a lot of temporal good, it's only when they become fanatical or radical and a threat to society they're found out.No need to ask the real God to please stand up as He/She/It is already standing up, it's just we're focusing on the fake ones.

I always wanted to have a band called The Tautological Logicians. But when my time came I was outvoted by the others, in favor of The Electric Cucumbers. But even with that far sexier name came dismal failure. So I got into writing apps that helps musicians come up with catchy band names. It's big in Japan I believe.

So anyways, I haven't been this confused about the truth since those rumors that Ted Cruz was the lead singer for the Christian hair metal band Stryper. Looking at the pictures, dude sure looks like him. Maybe logical, but not exactly truth.

Hey there GDB and gang:

GDB quoted: "not only do we not possess such knowledge, but we are even, on principle, incapable of possessing it, and therefore we will also not possess it in the future."

I would turn this around and say "we do indeed possess such knowledge, we are very capable of possessing it, and therefore we will possess it in the future."

Because each person is or contains a copy of the whole Cosmos, each person carries or can reach any/all knowledge. The ENTIRETY of all knowledge is ours for the knowing. We have it all. It is inside us.

However, due to the work-load here on Earth, all the tasks to be done, it is not advisable to blow time accessing knowledge which is not needed for the task at hand. FOCUS is key. And this is why we seem "ignorant." Rest assured you'll have plenty of time to wallow in as much knowledge as you can stand after your dead.

GDB mentioned survival. Why do we want to survive? It all comes down to the agreement you made before coming to Earth. This is a work-place, and you have agreed to do your best. And that means surviving and sticking with it, even when the going gets tough. We do this for God, we have promised Him a serious effort.

If anyone has questions on these matters please ask. The knowledge is right there is front of us, I can show it to you or you can grab it yourself.

Ask me anything, I do indeed have all the answers.

Dear God, is Ted Cruz the lead singer for Stryper? Or not?

Hello all and sundry, Happy Mothers Day 2020.

Now lets talk about easing restrictions and returning to normal. Do you think we are ready?

Do you think COVID-19 restrictions represent an abuse of government power?

What if the government wants to keep this milieu around for awhile, the restriction on gatherings, the testing, the monitoring, the tracking, the quarantines, the arrests for defying government edicts, etc. We could get used to that.

By we, I mean bureaucrats and government types. We are kind of thrilled by all this. Can we keep it? That's the question on our minds.

Weigh in. Because Big Brother can't read your mind. Yet.

You said it little brothah. We wee folks want some of what our corporate overlords are getting. It doesn't have to be trillions in newly minted cash, or too big to fail dough, or any of that hopey changey MAGA crap. We just a little sumpin for doin nothin, since they's makin us do nothin.

How 'bout this: Return to normal never.

Let's explore how we can keep the changes and build on them:

Stimulus payments to citizens: How about these come out monthly for the next 20 years? The amounts to be tailored to equal a living wage.

Non-essential jobs: No need to bring all of these back. Let those who want to let go of working enjoy a peaceful permanent furlough on us, the taxpayers. This is merciful and just.

Petroleum: Whatever we have been doing to keep the demand and prices low, by golly let's keep doing it. This is has been mighty fine.

Social Distancing: We might as well just make this a permanent thing, as the next epidemic is always waiting in the wings anyway.

Church Services: Mass can be done by streaming video, who knew. This has been a been to infection control.

Government Involvement: We have seen very heavy government involvement in our lives over the past 3 months, and this shows the government loves/cares for us. I for one would welcome a continued close walk with the Feds, State, and local official. Bring back the daily Presidential briefings. These really increased approval ratings for the President.

In Summary: Sure this has been weird and scary. If we can just make sure everyone gets what the need, then things will be fine.

And the decreased traffic, pollution, and carbon burden, a tasty frosting on this package of benefits.

I sorrow for the 70K plus COVID-19 fatalities; they have paid the ultimate price to purchase for us this brave new world. We owe it to them to make it GREAT.
