Abandoning My Post

Just because I haven't been posting lately, it doesn't mean I haven't been writing posts. It's just that I haven't been finishing them. This morning I will try to finish them, or at least recover what seems postable, and flush the rest.

Here's one from two or three weeks ago, when we went through a libertarian phase. Not libertarian in the usual sense of the word, but in the deeper context of trying -- as usual -- to figure out how this particular cosmos works. It obviously works, or we wouldn't be here. But the deeper reasons are on the metaphysical, not merely physical, plane.

Now, a key component of the cosmos is indeed liberty, which can under no circumstances be understood or even conceptualized "from the bottom up"; nor, for the same reason, can the top be reduced to the bottom without eliminating precisely what needs to be explained. If we aren't free to explain our freedom, then no explanation of anything is possible.

This is a two-way, hierarchical cosmos, and that's all there is to it. Empiricists and positivists deny one end, while idealists and many religionists deny the other, but both approaches result in an impoverished cosmos unfit for, and indeed uninhabitable by, man.

In certain emergencies or embarrassing situations I like to say to myself I'm not here and this isn't happening. But I would never dream of elevating this to a metaphysic! Rather, I'm only a situational Buddhist.

Longtime readers will recognize this as our usual approach to things: instead of beginning with, say, physics or chemistry, and trying to figure out how these can make the ontological leap to man, we begin with the most undeniable fact of all -- in my case, me -- and try to figure out what sort of cosmos must exist in order for such an unlikely fact to even be possible, let alone actual. (And we won't even get into the actualizing process, which adds another layer to the mystery of the human subject -- i.e., in what kind of orthoparadoxical cosmos is it possible to become who one is?).

Not surprisingly, it turns out that I am only possible in a very peculiar universe -- and not just because I myself am peculiar. In the grander scheme of things, everyone is peculiar, which is to say, unique, and how is this possible? In other words, what is the principle of unique personhood, its sufficient reason?

There is no such principle in, say, physics, in which things that appear diverse on the surface are reduced to (explained by) a handful of simple laws. But persons are characterized by their unrepeatable uniqueness; we might say that there's only one to a customer, notwithstanding the occasional case of multiple personality disorder on the one hand, or hivemind progressive conformist on the other.

In physics nothing is unique; rather, every event is fully reducible to more general laws. Now, it is true that humans are constrained by "human nature," otherwise we wouldn't have the word "human." And yet, the human being simultaneously belongs to a species while at the same time truly being his own species -- an oxymoronical "species of one."

So yes, not only are you weird, but I would go so far as to say that if you are not weird, then you're doing it wrong

Nor am I talking about merely posing as a weirdo in order to get attention, nor the tiresome contemporary plague of mental illness masquerading as uniqueness. Such persons are easily lumped into their diagnostic category, which is the opposite of uniqueness. Paranoid conspiracy theorists are a dime a dozen. Or maybe you've never watched MSNBC.

Naturally, this goes to the cosmic heresy of "identity" politics, which is the systematic denial of human identity. For to reduce identity to some superficial group characteristic is to deny one's human identity, precisely. Al Sharpton, or Joy Reid, or Barack Obama, are just professional black people -- serious jokes but not serious persons.

If you are a feminist, for example, you are just a cliché, not a proper three-dimensional person (i.e., biological, psychological, and spiritual). Moreover, you are no doubt identifying with the superficial feminist cliché in order to deny some pain associated with your deeper personhood. After all, being a feminist, stupid and shallow as it is, is much easier than becoming who you actually are.

Oh, by the way, I just figured out why I'm not finishing these posts. It's due to our newfound absence of time constraints brought about by retirement. Back when I was gainfully employed, I had to wrap things up in order reenter the Conspiracy. Now I can just blah-blah-blog all day if I want to, like a song that goes on forever. The medium is the message, and now the medium is timelessness unbound instead of the bounds of temporality.

This implies that I need to set an artificial limit to my writing, like stopping at 10:30, even if

Oh sh*t really, the haunting is first to post? I should refrain and see what Julie has to comment.

But I have those pesky time constraints the GDB was writing about, so I'm just going to lunge ahead.

This post was worth the wait for completion. It is fascinating in the way it raises so many important metaphysical questions on its way towards settling into the usual insultainment. But we really do need the bashing, because that's how GDB illustrates the main points, i.e, by talking about qualities lacking in progressives.

I'm cool with the bashing. Even I bash progressives and I am one. We are a sad lot. How I know.

Sigh. We've been over this many times. Each soul is unique. Each of the many lives the soul takes features a bucket list, a program of sorts of what is to be experienced, on the way towards creating a polished and perfected soul. The process takes deep time, millions of years or even hundreds of millions of years.

Uniqueness is not a mystery. The Earth was carefully set up to a be a vale of soul-making, a school of hard knocks, a place distinct from where the angels dwell. A bad world. A bug world.

God did created it all on purpose, He made it for us, he developed all the beasties up to us, and he is the Program Manager in Chief.

Now that you know what Earth is for, the rest of it all falls into place. So, why do bad things happen to good people? It's a bug world. Good answer.

Complicating matters, parallel to the soul evolution there is a physical evolution where the bodies are developed and each soul has to participate in this program too.

Natural selection is a thing. It is there on purpose for R&D. God knows all about it, he invented the processssssssss.

So that's why a man must leave his parents and become one flesh with his mate. Mandatory. Unless your gay.

What is gayness all about? You guessed it, part of the program. At some point you will be gay, and in the past you have been gay many times. La la la.

William Fagge,
Progressivism is all about the bashing, otherwise known in those circles as debate, since ya know, humanity hasn’t been down this pathway with as much population and technology going on ever before, and progressives need to problem solve with at best, Jesus’ limited assistance.

Conversely, modern conservatism is all about conserving and thus debate is not only prohibited, but is metaphysically impossible. In fact, if one wants to debate in the modern conservative realm they’re quickly outed as a progressive. And nobody wants to debate with anybody who's going straight to hell.

Anyhoo…
a key component of the cosmos is indeed liberty?

Yes, according to our metaphysical laws, yes. My precious. But if an extinction level asteroid was found to be headed towards earth, would we be violating those laws of liberty if we allowed big government to try and stop it? In spite of all that coin going to big corporate? Discuss. But not for too long because an asteroid was just discovered to be headed our way.

I'll admit, tying to reconcile hard core Ayn Rand with Jesus’ teachings is one challenging bugger. A vindictive Russian bitch vs. the Prince of Peace. But I think it can be done, as long as you think killing off billions of humans is part of Gods plan.

Another thought, before I go away for at least a couple hours.

It just hit me that it’s easier and a lot more fun, to be a unique warrior for liberty if one is an entitled white American wealthy, than it is if one is not. Now, if you have low self-esteem, you’ll usually blame yourself and if wise, you’ll strive to improve yourself until you’re an entitled white American wealthy and can then preach a bit more loudly (and haughtily) about liberty and uniqueness, while blaming everybody else for whatever it is that irks you.

This is based on the brilliant teachings of Rob Henderson, who’s passing on the brilliant teachings of Roy Baumeister. Don’t ask me whose brilliant teachings Roy Baumeister is passing on, because frankly I don’t know. But here’ the general idea:

"People with low self-esteem tend to blame themselves when things go wrong. People with high self-esteem tend to blame external factors, such as other people, the situation, or various obstacles”

The bottom line, is that self-esteem seems to dictate how liberty is being perceived. And so I ask, who is going to be more correct, the low esteem loser or the high esteem winner? And more importantly, is personal responsibility easier, and of better quality, for the low self-esteemer, or for the high self-esteemer?

Gagdad wrote:

"...After all, being a feminist, stupid and shallow as it is, is much easier than becoming who you actually are."

I'll rebut this as feminism is partially but not all vapid.

Gagdad, have you been an in-member of all-male groups? We are talking sports teams, jobs with few women around like construction, law enforcement, a gathering of the guys for a poker game, or going fishing and hunting with some pals.

I'll bet you have.

You are old enough to have experienced these groups during the late twentieth century too I suppose.

Now tell me with a straight face there has never been any need for a feminine rebellion. Be honest.

Do women really have two holes so they can be carried like a six pack?

Do women possess legs only so they can move from the bedroom to the kitchen? Sound familiar?

Women should be obscene but not heard? Yeah?

Does no mean maybe, does maybe mean yes, and does yes mean anal? Well, does it?

The lady doctor walks in to greet the patient. "Oh, you must be the nurse. Well honey I need a doctor."

So over the years women have mounted a campaign to get a little respect and it has worked.

Then they got militant and went a bit overboard. Women are people. Power intoxicates them like it does men.

So now you call the whole feminist thing stupid and shallow. That is errata and you know it.

In your own home the spouse wields considerable power, does she not? Are you calling her stupid? Shallow?

You had better watch your P's and Q's, Senor. You are not getting a free pass on this one.

Right Julie?

Well I'm going to harp on this feminist thing, because the flock has a right to sound writing which is sadly lacking here in this post.

And you, Van. Are on board with GDB on this or just chicken to speak your mind?

GDB further wrote "...when you are a feminist, for example, you are just a cliché, not a proper three-dimensional person (i.e., biological, psychological, and spiritual)."

Now GBD, recall Samuel Harris and Cotton Mather fostering and conducting the witch prosecutions in Salem. Feminists were the target. Very cliched. Just say they are in league with the Devil.

By accepting questionable spectral evidence in order to get convictions, they handed too much power to the adolescent female accusers.

Cotton Mather charged Giles Corey with witchcraft. Giles would not answer to the charges. Standing mute under English law triggers the unusual punishment of being pressed under stones. He underwent this and died after several days. People did not seem to like this cruel spectacle.

The 100% conviction rate of supposed "firebrands of hell" began to get people wondering.

Giles last words were "more weight." The balls that required, mind-blowing.

Eventually the adolescent accusers got around to accusing everyone. They were besotted with their power. Cotton rebuked one. Big mistake. The finger spun around and pointed towards the bench. Well, two of the benches wives to be exact.

That broke the prosecution's nerve. Woah. Still with 150 witches incarcerated and awaiting trial, the undertaking started to risky to the prosectution.

"This court was appointed by God" thundered the Governor Phipps. "It cannot be in error."

Yeahhhhh. Sarah and Judy say your wife's a witch, Phipps.

"Stop this travesty" now thundered Governor Phipps. A wise choice.

Anyone ever encounter a batsh*t crazy teenage girl? I'm sure you have.

I write all this by way of saying, there is some very colorful history behind feminists and feminism. You can't just glad-hand that history away.

You can't just accuse someone of being a witch, because spectral evidence is no longer accepted.

You can thank our earliest proto-feminists for moving our civilization forward by a giant leap.

So go ahead and talk sh*t. Just don't expect anyone to believe it.

Over-the-counter treatment for mental illness.

mdillof said...

Excellent analysis, as usual, Gagdad! It is interesting why both great minds, as well as not so great minds, fall for the universal, whether the universal take the form, for example, of ancient myths, Jungian archetypes, Platonic Forms, scientific laws, and identity politics. Only the universal is knowable. The particular, the unique isn't knowable. It isn't intelligible. There is something in us that demands intelligibility, even if it removes us from concrete reality, and alienates us from the real.

And yet, unless one is essentially a Platonist, the particular, the unique, the individual is what's real and it's what's loved, as the romantic poets rightly assert, and as does Unamuno in "The Tragic Sense of Life," and as do Zen masters like D.T. Suzuki.

There have been moments, as of late, when I let go of seeing things, trees, flowers, animals, houses, and people, under the rubric of a universal, but instead saw them in their particularity. Such moments are very intense, indeed astonishing. If I have a proclivity to avoid such moments it is because I dread the uncanny feeling that is apt to emerge.

Gagdad Bob said...

The Universal becomes particular that the particular might become Universal.

julie said...

If I may, my process of creating the canine portraits linked above requires both particular individuals (the photos sent by the client) and universals.

That is, the photos for the most part had great, expressive views of the faces, but the bodies were at odd angles which can't be reconciled into one image that would fit the layout of the final composite painting. In some, because the camera was so close to an upturned face, there's hardly a body to work with at all. To fill in the gaps, I had to combine the individual features of each dog with the universal body type they most closely resemble in order to come up with something that accurately visually represents those particular dogs, who nevertheless fall into archetypes of different breeds. So doing an image search for "yellow lab sitting" yields a wide array of just that - all different, but yet clearly all fitting a particular archetype. Putting a lab head on a bulldog body will create something, but it won't look anything like that particular dog.

So far, I've been getting good feedback, so I must be on to something here...

mdillof said...

Very interesting! I thought that the universal was the middle term, lying between the particular and the absolute, at least Kierkegaard, in "The Sickness Unto Death," suggests as much. He does so in his analysis of God's command to Abraham that he sacrifice Isaac. Neither the particular nor the absolute is intelligible. Only the universal is.

In any case, is the Self a representation of the universal or of the absolute? I would think the latter. In that case, Self-realization would be the absolute paradoxically coming to know itself by dreaming that it's the many individuals, and then awakening from It's dream.

"One reason that Socialism is so attractive to its sympathizers is because of its ambiguity. It allows each individual to imagine a political system that will perfectly coincide with their own individual preferences and imagination. But specifics are the death of Socialism. It is when specifics are demanded that everything falls apart for it. Yet life itself is about nothing but specifics, you cannot do anything 'in general'."

Julie wrote "One reason that Socialism is so attractive to its sympathizers is because of its ambiguity. It allows each individual to imagine a political system that will perfectly coincide with their own individual preferences and imagination."

There is only one reason Socialism is attractive. Basic Universal Income.

The imagined blissful relief from the constant tension of trying to figure out how to make a buck so you don't become homeless and subsist on government cheese under a highway overpass is the draw.

To each according to their need. Endless slack.

So that's why people like Socialism. It seems to promise a more humane society by taking the dreadful competitive element out of it.

Some people thrive on competition and some people find competition unloving at best and horrid at worst.

So your car's extended warranty has expired. Someone wants to talk to you about that. Very badly.

So now you get it. Socialism means relief from financial anxiety.

Now for Mr. Musk and other over-achievers, that was never a problem to begin with.

But for Tony Tutone who didn't finish high school and who likes to smoke blunts, the financial thing is a real monkey on the back.

Anonymous said...

No, socialism makes foolish and gullible people think they'll be free from financial anxiety.

The reality is that not only will the financial anxiety skyrocket as jobs disappear and the government runs out of other people's money, but people will also experience much more existential anxieties such as the utter lack of available food, clean water, and basic medical care.

See Venezuela for details.

Anon @10/18/2021 05:30:00 PM speaks of Venequela.

There are a lot of reasons why Venezuela sucks, not the least of which is the effectiveness of American economic sanctions. Nobody nationalizes US oil. (and let that be a lesson to you, Iran).

But this isn't about that. The Venezuelan government chose to do an Alaska, to give its citizens a check from the oil proceeds. But where Alaskans spent their oil money on paying for heat in the winter, most of which is oil-fired thereby creating a benficial economic loop, the Venezuelans spent their oil money on stuff like Nike shoes, garish makeup, and Honda dirt bikes, none of which are made anywhere near Venezuela.

So along comes Norway, said to be even more socialist than Venezuela.

Yet Norway is considered a rousing success. I learned that the Norwegian government chose to instead of just giving away their oil loot, to keep it and spend it on the "common good", in the form of well thought out economic advances on behalf of the people. Talk about a big government power grab! Yet Norway's a rousing economic and quality of life success.

Could you elaborate more about the differences between socialist Venezuela and socialist Norway? I tried asking another conservative "anon" once before and they told me, after much deflective diversion, that Norway is just plain whiter.

Prager is said to be quite wealthy. So wealthy in fact, that I consider his intentional contraction of covid to be a vulgar display of wealth. It costs a lot to do a major hospital stay and even if you get better, you’ll be in it for six figures and possible expensive heath concerns for the rest of your life. But no doubts Prager couldn’t care less, with all that money to burn.

For the less wealthy, there are entire websites and YouTube channels devoted to following former anti-vaxxers, anti-maskers, and covid-hoaxers on their death bed adventures. A few cry like little girls about how they were sadly mistaken. But the strong ones proclaim they wouldn’t have done anything different before going on to meet their maker. Meanwhile on earth, their wives with the four children get the bill and wonder what they’re gonna do without their breadwinner. There are lots and lots of stories like that. Would you like me to share a few?

It is a good performance. Once upon a time it took me a lot at the Jazzi cafe. Hank Mobley is also good, but Lee Morgan is so stylish as to be frightened. Contrast with Hank clutter and clutter viscous phasing, it is exhilarating where you fly with the sharpness of a Japanese sword. 8 beats of the dip of the first song, rather than jazz-rock, the phasing of some afrobeat sticky Hank is sensual and uncut.

4th song, The vanmp, Billy Higgins dr, polyrhythmic liveliness, crisp and cool. Recent young people, even if there is no tech... 1965 work, somehow listening and fun at the same time, finest tailoring, slender Reminding the sickness of Hank Mobley, the fierce end of Lee Morgan, who dressed the suit perfectly, and want to stretch his spine. I would like to think about it.

It is a recording board that was obscure moyamotha of separation, but the performance content is the best.

The important point is that mental illness is prior to the form it takes; it is the constant, while modern culture provides novel ways of expressing it. Now, this was back before the internet, when most trolling was done on stall walls in public restrooms. Back in those days, one would scribble their angst, various poems for the day, or their phone numbers on toilet stall walls. And just as today, these scribblings would get the inevitable troll’s own scribblings (sometimes with drawings) in response. I remember one written in extravagant cursive, full of flourishes:
Of God one doesn't speak with any precision or seriousness except in poetry.

Intrigued about the possibility of an exchange with another great mind, I responded: “Only somebody with a tiny dick would write something like that”

The next day came a response, in the same extravagant cursive, full of flourishes:
Individualism is the cradle of vulgarity.“

The wall he was writing on was some distance away from the toilet. I had to stretch really far to respond: “I bet you’re writing on this wall while getting seat toilet crud on your dick.”

The next day in extravagant cursive, full of flourishes:
I’m writing these aphorisms with my dick!

After that one, it was on.

Perhaps the most intriguing is the masterpiece “Stand!” The exciting performance after the rhythm change can be enjoyed a little longer, but the band immediately stopped playing. In the end, the chorus of hand claps and “Nanana Nana Nana” is a
gakkari content that only continues.

That said, the live of “St. James's Hospital” where pets cry sobbing, “Did you do this!?” There is also a take, and it must be a disc that you want to keep if you are a maniac.

In the 60's, the creation of Sly immediately after his debut is a gigantic vigor comparable to Jimihen.

The next thing I would like to expect is to elucidate the mystery of the funk's gold tower “Thank You.” Whether Sly or Larry Graham is the idea of a slap-based riff and its centric arrangement, which could be said to be the big invention of the Issei. So it seems to be said that the arrangement is sly and the riff is rally. For me, this is a long-standing mystery on the same level as the dramatic change of arrangement in Stones's “Song of Mercy for the Devils.”
