Existence on Loan From God

The biggest little words in all of creation must be I and Be, and I suppose in that order. We've written a great deal about the former, not as much about the latter, except insofar as I AM -- which simply means that ultimate reality is, and is personal.

"Be" is an innocent enough sounding word, and yet, it is of the greatest consequence. For example, every debate, every dispute, every argument at every level, from the silly to the profound, comes down to what is. I say 2+2 is 4. You say math is a white supremacist conspiracy. Which is it?

Granted, the business of isness can get murkier as we ascend the vertical hierarchy into morality, philosophy, and politics. Or so we have heard from the worldly wise, which is to say, terrestrial tools.

In truth, the higher we ascend, the more we converge upon the apex of absolute and necessary, hence eternal, truths.  No truths can more secure than these, because the very possibility of truth is grounded in them.

Science, for example, is at the base of an epistemological and ontological pyramid that flows from the top down and back up; in other words, it can trace the real because it is actually retracing it. It doesn't invent, but dis-covers.

That little prelude was inspired by the title of a chapter in The Sense of Mystery called The Verb "To Be -- Its Sense and Its Scope

Every noun comes down to Is it?, It is, or It isn't. This truism is grounded in the principle of non-contradiction, in that a thing either is or isn't. But so too can every verb be so reduced. To say "Peter runs" is to say "Peter is running," such that running is the caseIt exists.

From here Fr. Reginald highlights the gulf between "to have" and "to be." We, for example, can have truth. But can we be truth, full stop? Can anyone?

Yes, if I AM is the case, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

At the top of the cosmic hierarchy is necessary being:

Only God is His Existence; He alone is Being Itself and was able to say, "I am that I am," or, "He who is." In contrast, every other being has existence.

You and I surely exist. But we aren't existence itself. We aren't necessary. We are contingent, wholly dependent upon that which exists necessarily. So, "There is an abyss that separates being and having."

Now, as alluded to in paragraph two, every dispute comes down to what is and isn't (and what could be, based upon real potential).

"To be" is "at the basis of all judgments," and is indeed "the soul of judgment." Someone with poor judgment, for example, makes decisions rooted in things that are not the case, that have no being (or potential being, like socialism or "social justice").

Conversely, prudence -- rightly ordered practical judgment -- is founded upon conformity with reality:

true judgment itself corresponds to reality -- that is, to the existence of things.... Judgment is true if it affirms that which is and if it denies that which is not.

For this reason, "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness....'

It's a little hard to continue, because I just found out that Rush has died. Now, Rush was a great man -- which is to say, he had greatness. He was not greatness itself, of course. Rather, as he was quick to point out, his talent was on loan from God. The loan has been repayed in full, but let's be thankful for all the hearts and minds he transformed with that modest loan of human capital from the First Bank of Realville.

And let's even be thankful for the unhinged hatred his passing will provoke on the left, because of the clarity it provides. Still, woe to the left, who call greatness evil and evil great.

In this spirit, please ignore any trollish comments today, except insofar as to learn from them the true nature of the left and to recall There but for the grace of God go I....

*sigh*

This past year has seen so much loss. We knew it was coming with Rush, but even so...

I am quite sure that the Lord welcomes him with a "Well done, good and faithful servant."

You know you're doing the Lord's work when you generate that kind of hatred from the left. With Rush gone, Tucker Carlson has just moved up to #1.

julie said...

Tucker seems like a good man, but he's no Rush. Then again, neither is anyone else.

Can we give Ben Shapiro a few years to smooth his edges?

Rush was unique.

Gagdad Bob said...

Can't see it -- hard to imagine him ever being "beloved."

julie said...

Yeah, I have a hard time with that one. Plus his voice is unbearable.

Maybe Rush once believed that only the crappy jobs would go overseas. Maybe he also believed that smoking would never be what killed him. But at least he finally spoke of McConnell and his wife being financially tied to the Chicom government, that these are not Americas friends nor are they actually capitalist.

Too squirrelly. There's lots of young conservative talent out there, however. And a huge potential audience, since young people seem naturally drawn to rebellion and non-conformity. I guess we'll find out.

I have long been a left-leaning person. I have taken evil for good and good for evil many, many times. I have no bearing on reality and I'm OK with that.

I am so woke I never need coffee. I'm so street even my homies say I'm street. I am a member of Antifa, however Antifa does not know that.

I am gender-fluid, tattooed, pierced, dread-locked. I wear tight black leggings and crocs. I smoke the devil's lettuce. I voted for Biden at least five times. I receive hand-outs. I can't remember when I last bathed. I like to sleep in. I have never read an entire book from start to finish. I have a Bachelor's degree in Contemporary Oppressive Social Constructs.

I have a social media following. I told my two children to pick whatever gender they wanted to be. Their father is a woman. Their mother is a man. My daughter has a penis. My son has a vagina.

I go in the men's room or the ladies room, which ever I feel like at any given time.

Now then, how do you think I'm ever going to change when I am having such a good time? Because I enjoy every minute of every day.

So there you have it. The opposition has spoken. It's your move except I don't care.

I've become fond of Johnny Massacre. A young Brit living in Japan, and changes hair color often. He's quite likeable, too.

Why does the right make heroes of the most repellent specimens of humanity? I mean, Trump, Limbaugh, and Carlson – whatever your politics may be, these are objectively disgusting people. Ugly, nasty, and bullying. I mean, can't you find a conservative that doesn't make normal people retch? Or is the ugliness the point?

We've had over 100,000 comments, but I think readers will agree that that is the most instructive ever.

Yep.

Explains why we pray for our enemies. What, short of a miracle, could help such a lost soul?

Anonymous said...

Modern conservatism is all about making new enemies. Is that because praying is so much fun?

No vaccine yet for Trump Derangement Syndrome.

That's all you got, "Trump Derangement Syndrome"?

I remember when Krauthammer coined the "Derangement Syndrome" term in jest. People wanting to move to Canada just because of Bush being elected in '04 was kinda funny. Bush Derangement Syndrome he called it. Sadly it became a derision taken seriously by people who desperately need enemies. Not very Christian.

Limbaugh satisfied this need. He was a drug addict, yet slammed drug addicts. He didn't really care if women got the same pay for the same job, yet he equated such females with the gas chambering of innocent Jews. His fans ate it all up anyways.

Now Krauthammer is dead, Limbaugh is dead, Bush despises Trump, and "Trump Derangement Syndrome" is supposed to mean something serious.

I despise Trump because he gets away with refusing to pay people who've done work for him, like Giuliani or many of his good and decent contractors. He never locked her up, or replaced Obamacare with something really great, or even built a wall. And then the Trump Plaza got imploded anyways. It all seems like such a waste.

ted said...

We agree. I am disappointed he didn't lock her up also.

Gagdad Bob said...

He did lock her up -- inside his head.

Anonymous is right -- Trump did absolutely NOTHING to alter the vast biological differences between men and women.

So Trump delivered on zero percent of his campaign promises. Nobody cared because those promises (the wall, lock her up, etc.) were all made tongue-in-cheek. They weren't going to happen and everybody knew it.

The bread and butter of the Trump presidential magic (got along well with world leaders, not a war-monger, spoke plainly, cut taxes, had good common sense) didn't get a whole lot of commentary which is a shame.

Another anonymous wrote of the hideousness of conservative icons like Trump, Rush, etc. Now the thing is, a wise person looks past exterior appearances. Many a frog is really a prince.

That being said, older conservative gentlemen should not be letting themselves go to seed if they are public figures; it would not kill them to hit the gym. Otherwise they get that pudgy white-man who wears suspenders vibe. And bathing to keep the musty smell down, also a good idea.

Well, carry on everyone. 2021 is mighty fun, is it not?

Dupree admit it, you find Caitlyn Jenner sexy. Here's an idea for you:

Anonymous made a point that conservatives are not known for their physical beauty. But do conservative icons make normal people retch? I think that is a reach.

Do they make normal people cringe a little? Well, maybe. It's a Nixon thing I guess.

How about nasty and bullying? Well, nasty is subjective. What do we mean by nasty? Golden showers? Prostitutes? Who among us does not have some kink? Do you like feet? Yes? Does that make you nasty?

Trump liked to say "You're fired." Is that bullying or is that effective personnel management? I think the latter.

As for Rush who did he ever bully? He was a talk-radio guy, so how can you bully anyone if you are not a boss of other people? Not possible.

The inner beauty of the conservative is the valuable thing. Conservatives cherish God. The conservative puts God above all and never misses weekly communion if it can't be helped.

In summary the conservatives could use fashion and fitness make-overs but are not bad people so we can stop insulting them in that manner. Thank you.

Anonymous made a point that conservatives are not known for their physical beauty.

That is not even close to what I said. I was talking about conservative figureheads like Limbaugh and Trump; I would assume regular conservatives have a regular distribution of physical beauty.

More importantly, I wasn't talking primarily about their physical appearance; it's their entire character is repellent, not just aesthetically but morally and as a question of character.

In summary the conservatives could use fashion and fitness make-overs but are not bad people so we can stop insulting them in that manner.

On the contrary, their affinity for such deeply awful people indicates that they are in fact bad people, rotten at the core. Some may be salvageable but the idiots here are pretty clearly beyond redemption, they have drunk the shit-flavored kool aide too deeply and will never change.

Or, they might change if the beatings continue.
