The Left: Diabolical or Just Barbaric?

Perhaps it's the heat -- or humidity -- wave we've been under, but I haven't felt impelled to write much for the past week or so, although I've been thinking a lot about the diabolical nature of the left, so it was a synchro-nicety to bump into this review of a book called The Devil and Karl Marx: Communism's Long March of Death, Deception, and Infiltration. Let's read it together and see what stands out.

The first sentence stands out:

Paul Kengor is a teacher and writer who has always had an eye for the spiritual dimension in history, politics, and economics.

Yes, the spiritual dimension in history, politics, and economics; or in other words, the vertical dimension that runs from God on down and back up again. Always and everywhere, leftism is a passionately spiritual movement.

As if that's a good thing! No one -- obviously -- believes more firmly in God than Satan. Indeed, Where religion is secularized, Satan becomes the last witness to God (NGD). And speaking of the Aphorist,

Many think that the devil died, but he merely walks around today disguised as a man.

The devil can achieve nothing great without the thoughtless collaboration of the virtues.

In that order: the devil walks around disguised as a virtuous man -- or signaling himself as one, to be precise. But such a man cannot do this without the projection of evil into the innocent: come for the cheap virtue, stay for the human sacrifice and spiritual cannibalism, i.e., the satanic eucharist (or dyscharist).

By the way, the leftist will say that we are utterly lacking in self-awareness, and that we are simply projecting evil into him; there are many ways to disprove this, but this will take us far afield. Let's just respond with a few preemptive aphorisms:

Men are divided into two camps: those who believe in original sin and those who are idiots.

Nobody will ever induce me to absolve human nature, because I know myself.

We can never count on a man who does not look upon himself with the gaze of an entomologist.

Those who remove man’s chains free only an animal.

Show me the Antifa or BLM member who understands these.

Let's continue reading: "terms such as collectivism and individualism only take the debate so far... Ultimately the fight comes down to spiritual warfare: good versus evil."

Precisely. This is one of the main things that prompted me to leave psychology behind and below, because when it comes to explaining the psyche, mere psychology doesn't cut it.

To put it another way, psychology is far too important a subject to be left to psychologists; for the person who is only a psychologist isn't even that.

Communism isn't so much a collection of economic policies, but a psychological phenomena, whereby losers and degenerates and resentful people take revenge and try to harm others.

Agreed, with the caveat that there is something about the psychological wound that opens the person to noxious vertical-spiritual influences, similar to how a wound in the skin opens one to harmful bacteria. (Also, it seems that these Antifa volks aren't just ugly on the inside.)

At the same time, there must be a weakened (or worse, wakened) immune response that allows the spiritual energies to enter and take root. The person must misidentify these as "good" and even virtuous. It's why the leftist is always morally superior to us. It's a large part of the appeal. Remember? I certainly do: to be on the left is to be more moral, more intelligent, and even more attuned to "art." A couple weeks ago one of our trolls made the claim that all art, creativity, and humor come from the left. Nuff said.

Clearly, Marx was a repulsive assoul. What then explains his appeal, being that he is probably the most influential single philosopher who has ever lived? At the moment, major American cities are being destroyed in his name. Can this be said of any other intellectual?

Although I agree with the inescapable connection Kengor makes between Marx’s life and his philosophy, I might not place so much emphasis on the man’s early life.

Yes, exactly. In hindsight, psychology can explain anyone. Hitler and Churchill both had abusive fathers. So what?

Let's see if amazon reviewers have anything helpful to throw onto our pile of insultainment.

The other point the book shows is that Marx was intent on subverting Christianity. That is a theme that runs through the book. Concrete examples of how Marxists would focus on undermining Christianity and Christians.

Yes, of course. Why wouldn't they? I was just reading yesterday in a book on Balthasar, how "the will to evil becomes the more entrenched the greater the counterpower of the divine goodness inviting it to convert." Yup. That's a soph-evident claim. Well, maybe not to Pope Francis.

I'm also rereading Hayek's The Fatal Conceit, which is a fine example of how far a secular economist can go without recourse to the vertical: pretty, pretty far, but not quite far enough. Examples:

To follow socialist morality would destroy much of present humankind and impoverish much of the rest.

... our language [Logos!] has been debased under socialist influence and we must keep ourselves from being seduced by it into socialist ways of thinking.

The savage is not solitary, and his instinct is collectivist.... an atavistic longing after the life of the noble savage is the main source of the collectivist tradition.

... a naive and childlike animistic view of the world has come to dominate social theory and is the foundation of socialist thought.

If we wish to save the world from barbarism we have to refute Socialism... (von Mises)

We'll see you next Tuesday, I guess, humidity permitting.

In that order: the devil walks around disguised as a virtuous man -- or signaling himself as one, to be precise.

These days, the Devil doesn't even bother to wear much of a disguise, too many people think he's more virtuous than God.

...stay for the human sacrifice and spiritual cannibalism

Whenever I think of modern day human sacrifice and cannibalism, Marina Abramovich comes to mind. I'm not at all sure that's it's simply spiritual in her case, though...

to be on the left is to be more moral, more intelligent, and even more attuned to "art."

Again, much of what passes for "art" and "culture" these days (again, Abramovich) is literally, not hyperbolically, satanic. As in, pop concerts by top artists where the themes are often fallen angels and the fun of hell, images of Baphomet, etc. It's not subtle.

To follow socialist morality would destroy much of present humankind and impoverish much of the rest.

In reading or watching stories about any futuristic Marxist/ socialist society, one thing that stands out is how generous the authors often about how nice/ functional such a society would be. The people are broken, or enslaved, but still they are imagined living in clean homes with working technology, enough to eat, decent medicine, etc. They never imagine Venezuela or Cuba, North Korea or even most of China; even after a century of evidence, they don't tend to believe just how bad it really is.

It's a crucial point that humans seem to be "hardwired" for socialism, if you believe in evolutionary psychology. Makes sense to me. In order to escape from it we have to transcend our genes, as is true of the civilizing process in general.

When tribes were mostly kinfolk-clannnish and held fewer than 150 members, it was easy for members to work together for survival in a brutish world. It was easy to determine and kick out the abhorrently counterproductive member, a fate worse than death in a brutish world.

So theoretically, everybody knew it in their own best survival interest to behave themselves, relative to tribal values, with only the most incorrigible of the abhorrents getting banished into an unforgivingly hostile world. Genetics could only be such because here we all are.

Today, with tribe sizes ranging from over 150 to virtually unlimited, abhorrents can camouflage themselves as "not-abhorrent". Power can even fall into the exact wrong hands.

I have a hard time understanding how a "respect for the individual" as a divine principle, overcomes this reality.

Hence the drama of existence.

Anonymous said...

Yes Petey, it is certainly quite the dramatic mystery.

Napoleon Bonaparte is said to have said that he preferred the individual over collective groups because individuals are easier to control.

Yet I vaguely remember a historic Paris newspaper which documented his escape from Elba. First it called him a loosed dog needing recapture, or something. But as Napoleon arrived in France and marched his way north to Paris, his entourage of individuals grew and grew and that newspaper gradually changed their tone. By the time he reached Paris that newspaper was calling him a national hero of the finest caliber.

Of course they would. Now that's the power of the individual! Or collective, I dunno.

Knock it off, Napoleon! Just make yourself a dang quesa-dilluh!

Bonaparte was smarter, but Dynamite had it half right.

Just promise that you'll make all of their wildest dreams come true if they vote for you. But he forgot the part where Summer Wheatley needed to be smeared as an America-hating Marxist in league with satanic black and hippie rioters bent on destroying our way of life.

The country is in the process of being devoured by fascists so yeah, great time to go on about the evils of communism.

If you really believe that, maybe this would be a good time to consider moving to Canada.

The only way to defeat fascism is to burn down our cities, encourage violent groups such as Antifa and BLM, and give the state more power over us.

Rioters, arsonists, looters, bullies, and thugs are teaching the country the true meaning of antifascism. It's working.

Anonymous said...

Since it's so very hard for Americans to separate the peaceful protesters from the thugs, we're gonna need to choose one or the other.

Anonymous said...

Why won't Republican mayors stop the Proud Boys from burning and looting our cities!

Anonymous said...

Because Republican mayors are usually from a superior race, plus a few tokens.

I choose fascists, since they’re on the side of capitalism. Plus they hated minorities and tolerated white Christian religions. Marxists killed millions even though they weren’t even from an inferior race. This seems far more evil to me.

Anonymous said...

Come on people now. If it’s possible to get all people to always value liberty and respect everyone’s individuality, then it shall also be possible to eliminate all sinning. It’ll be just like back when America was great. Everybody will be happy and secure and we won’t even need a government.

If we fail at this then we’re gonna have to go back to that tired old political horseshoe model where too left = too cold (gulags) and too right = too hot (gas chambers). And I never liked that model, because centrism always leads to the Clintons.

We cannot let this fail. So come on people now. Smile on your brother. Everybody get together, try to love one another right now.

Or else.

My grandfather many times claimed his father had met Karl Marx in person in London around 1855. So the story goes, Marx had a party at his residence. He got very drunk and revealed he was the Devil. To prove his claim, he jetted flames from his rectum. Then his eyes glowed red. These things were witnessed by several other people as well.

An attempt to exhume Marx's body at Highgate Cemetary by a group of fascist hooligans in 1942 ended badly; when the casket was opened Karl's body appeared to have avoided decomposition. Allegedly Karl then sat up and invited the hooligans to play cards. The losers would forfeit their souls. Winners would get $1 million pounds Sterling.

Three of the hooligans took Karl up on this bet; all lost at pinochle. These hooligans are now said to comprise Karl's infernal retinue.

You deemed Karl the most influential philosopher in the world, and I think he likes that. I mean, he would like that. If he were alive today. Ahem.

Infernal? You bet. Barbaric? Of courssssssssse.

That's actually pretty good, coming from an economist, summing up the misosophic views of an economist (marx), who summed up and repackaged the misosophic views of Comte & Rousseau with a bit more flair for marketing. Rousseau's ideal of the 'Noble Savage' is just what Pieper noted about the birds of prey, they saw 'a' world, not The world, and oh how he longed to see nothing more than what materially moved.

Van Harvey said...

Woo-hoo! I'm finally caught back up to date! Again. Drat. Now what'll I do with my slack? Oh yeah, nothing different.

If I may criticize the post-

Make no mistake, it a great post like all of the posts, but responsible readers should pipe up in the comment section if they note an opportunity for improvement.

Now, if I am not mistaken, your view is the central objection to Marx, Marxism, and Marxists all, is a lack of "the spiritual dimension in history, politics, and economics; or in other words, the vertical dimension that runs from God on down and back up again..." and that:

"Ultimately the fight comes down to spiritual warfare: good versus evil."

Further, you stated " Communism isn't so much a collection of economic policies, but a psychological phenomena, whereby losers and degenerates and resentful people take revenge and try to harm others."

That being said, if you are sided with Go(o)d, and are spiritual, how to explain your use of the terms "losers" and "degenerates?" How do you define a loser or a degenerate without taking a slap at your Creator? Did He not make all persons?

I think what you mean, the Communists are sinners. The only cure for sinning is repentance and salvation. Therefore, all sincere warriors against evil will evangelize strenuously. It it the only proper recourse for the problem. Each communist must accept Jesus as savior in order to properly cure her while still honoring her divine origin.

There are only the saved, and those in need of salvation.

All talk of combat, extirpation, elimination, suppression of Communists....is of the Devil. Therefore, put your back into spreading the good news rather than issuing denunciations. Does anyone agree with me? Do I speak out falsely?

The central problem with your argument you display evil antigens while deriding evil, which is confusing.

Is there room for improvement in your approach? Or is this commenter sadly mistaken?

And as a parting gift, watch out for hyperbole. You wrote: "At the moment, major American cities are being destroyed in his{Marx's} name."

Seriously? Do you know what percentage of the major cities have been destroyed? Any observer would tell you, the damage is minor, less damage than a single of the lesser air raids against London during the Blitz. The percentage of total buildings destroyed is on the order of 0.0001 percent.

I live in one of the destroyed cities. Seattle was once called "The Emerald City" because of its many fantastic green towers, prancing colorful ponies, and a citizenry prone to joyful dancing and marching whenever newbies were welcomed inside.

But that was before the Marxists. Before the destruction. You'll need to ignore what the media has been telling you as they are only ever tricksy and fake.

The truth is that every church has been burned to the ground. Looting gangs rule the night. Numbers of the beast have been spray painted everywhere (666) and demons run rampant. By day it's only the bravest of souls who venture from their hidey holes to view the carnage. Venezuela has even offered to make Seattle its colony.

This is what defunding the police looks like.

Cousin Dupree said...

That's crazy. There aren't any churches in Seattle.

Figuratively each of us is but one of a throng of silvery anchoveta schooling in Monterey Bay. Each individual fish is a perfect creation and beloved of God and He can track and know each of the billions of individuals, whilst simultaneously tracking the fall of any random sparrow anywhere in the world;

And all the while performing this same feat for all inhabited worlds sprinkled throughout the vast cosmic night;

God zooms HIs vision on to the city of Seattle and observes: "Ok, there's been cars burned, windows broken, and some fires. Repairs are underway. Yet Bob believed Seattle was being destroyed....what's with that? And Anonymous 3:01 has written satire which seems to have elements from the Wizard of Oz. And then Van posted a comment which even his Lord cannot fathom. This is all very entertaining...I love my Creation."

The worst flaw regarding the ‘fascism = communism’ model, is that liberty lovers can be easily brainwashed into demanding fascism/communism. This is usually done by making liberty lovers come to believe that fascism/communism is the only way to defeat fascism/communism.

It’s one of the stranger ironies.
