Rather, each of these rides piggyback on something much deeper. First, when ideology is in the saddle, it rides on man. But what is it in man that permits him to be so easily saddled?"

I feel your pain. When I get those folks who think it all started in the 1960's, or for the deeper thinkers, the 1930's, I show them some pamphlets and letters making the same complaints in the 1920's. At which point they usually say "It's all Dewey's fault!". Then I show them some info from the 1890's, and some might mutter about the Democrats! or something... at which point I point them to uber-Republican Morrill who first proposed and help to establish the first Dept of Education and teachers colleges that helped to begin roping all teachers into one noose through Teachers colleges, beginning in the mid 1860's. The stragglers will then say Lincoln!... at which point I show them 'Reformers' from the 1840-50's trying to make the same skills oriented changes that'd turn Education to amoral skillz centers.

By that time I'm usually standing all alone, but occasionally a stubborn one will stick around and shout "They hate America!", and then I show them some fun letters and pamphlets from some of the Founders themselves, Dr. Rush, Noah Webster and some others, advocating for making the changes that the first reformers used to begin eliminating the classical materials that the Founder's were educated through (Homer, Virgil, The Bible, Shakespeare, Cicero...), making it so easy for Dewey & others to eliminate Principles in favor of pragmatic 'truths' that change with the moment. If they're still there, they might say... 'wuh...???'.

Then we can begin looking at where Dewey got his ideas from (Pierce, Hegel, Kant, Fichte), and where they got their ideas from (Hume, Godwin, Rousseau), and where they found the easiest means to wish reality into line, Descartes. And of course where HE got it from, was from being Human and looking to himself for answers.

That last bit rarely goes down well.
Van Harveyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08470413719262297062noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8580258.post-1738771148919316212015-09-29T11:43:50.151-07:002015-09-29T11:43:50.151-07:00I was so hoping you'd review that book, and wa...I was so hoping you'd review that book, and was poised to drop you a lineHappyAcresnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8580258.post-91126055244605162072015-09-29T11:31:15.444-07:002015-09-29T11:31:15.444-07:00I tried calling Ben last time he was silent but co...I tried calling Ben last time he was silent but couldn't get him. With the passage of time, we'll arrive at better truths, just as natural selection has produced better eyes and more clever apes.

This ties in, too, with our culture's tendency to worship IQ. If truth were indeed relative, then the smarter one is, the more "better truths" one will command. But in reality, what is True really does partake of the Absolute; so long as one is capable of understanding 2+2=4, it can't really be understood "better" if your IQ is 180. Beyond a certain point, I suspect, all that extra intelligence would make a brain crazy for lack of adequate stimulation.juliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15975754287030568726noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8580258.post-49324565644639616032015-09-29T10:46:28.685-07:002015-09-29T10:46:28.685-07:00"there are no fixed or eternal principles tha..."there are no fixed or eternal principles that govern, or ought to govern, the politics of a decent regime."

Then by what measure can one call a regime "decent"?juliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15975754287030568726noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8580258.post-49340525674221579672015-09-29T10:42:37.042-07:002015-09-29T10:42:37.042-07:00And "truth" would simply be a good fit b...And "truth" would simply be a good fit between mind and environment. And a good fit means that it promotes survival and reproduction, or babes and power.

By that reasoning, the First World with its plummeting birthrates and growing disinterest in reproduction is an abject failure, and has little to no hope of lasting very far into the future. "Be fruitful and multiply" is far more progressive, in its way, than "zero population growth" or "do what you will."
