The Gospel of George

Here is a wonderful, gospel-inflected version of My Sweet Lord, performed by Johnnie Cochran.... no, wait, by Billy Preston, who died not too long thereafter. It is from the Concert For George, which was held one year after Harrison's passing. The entire DVD is well worth seeing. Notice how much George's son, who is one of the guitarists, looks just like him, both in appearance and manner:

Another nice clip from the film featuring Ravi Shankar's daughter, Anoushka, who is extremely easy on the, er, ears. For you fellows who think you don't like sitar, take a look... er, listen:

Is it just me, or is there a kind of dark mystery in her hauntingly beautiful technique?:

Here's a closer look at her nubile, er, nimble fingers:

I like how she can pull off the nose piercing without looking like a pagan... wait, maybe it's because she is a pagan...

I'm sure Vanderleun would agree with me that she is Vice Presidential timbre.

Thanks for the videos. Ravi has two very talented daughters, and BOTH are easy on the, er, ears. And I love Billy Preston's version of a (derivative) classic. And, yes, George's son is a veritable spittin' image.

Yes, the video of the Concert for George is a must-see, prob my favorite concert video of all time. It is magic. Not to be too technical, but I recommend watching the full concert version over the edited theatrical version to get the full mojo. I have seen Anoushka live a couple times and she is quite stunning in every way.

She conducts herself with such dignity, she reminds me of a real princess. She has such a regal bearing. If only young women could imitate that archetype instead of the subhuman models of popular culture. But that's feminism for you: the destruction and elimination of the feminine.

Agree on the dignity and carriage part of Ravi's daughter and the general sentiment about the bearing of an artist.

My only problem with One Cosmos is reconciling the music to the intellectual depth of the words. I mostly find the music very trivial and the words very profound. They scream for Bach, Mozart and Late Beethoven.

Hey, I only wish my words could be as profound as the music of Aretha, or Van, or Stevie Ray, or the Allman Brothers, or Howlin' Wolf, or Dexter Gordon, or Art Pepper.... Without them, I might never have known about the place where the words come from.

Regal bearing-- a few years back decided to try a Shakespeare play [or maybe just read the synopsis] I'd never heard of, and about the only thing retained was the image of a princess who had been kidnapped and was raised on a faraway island but stood out from the other girls her age obviously being the daughter of a Queen

Bob,
You might like Lacy J. Dalton's 16th Avenue. It came out when I was A youngster and always touched me.

Like a lot of good music it never made it to the very top of the charts.

I have the AKUS version of this piece, but this performance outdoes that one.

I'll take dobro over sitar any day!

I have noticed that some of the most beautiful women in the world come from India.

Sue: That's the music! Something about earth, wind and fire working together in harmony that makes the soul sing. The dialectic of wood and metal can't be reproduced by any artificial means.

They're both amazing - beautiful, talented, and worthy of emulation. Which of course is why neither gets much mainstream attention.

And speaking as a female, what is it about really beautiful women (by which I mean, the ones who come across as real) that touches the heart in such a way that it makes you want to sigh? Of course, that's why when women are ugly in character, it's so much more of an affront.
